Lia is a 12 years old girl. She gave a speech at her school about abortion. Despite discouragement and outright opposition, Lia's presentation was so well done that she reportedly won the contest she was told she would be disqualified from, due to the "controversial" message of her speech.
God bless her!

Tips for my parishioners....

that may help them understand their chaplain!

I found a website that supposes to help American people understand France and the French. I am quite sceptical about that, because I am not so sure that the French can be understood by anyone except the French themselves..... No, it is a joke!!!!! But it reminds me of this text by Charles Peguy who put these words in God's mouth: When there will be no more French, there are things that I do that nobody will understand.
Anyway, I find this website funny... and interesting too. Do I match the description? Well, those who know me can tell.
Some excerpts from the website

Are the French crazy ?
The French, who pride themselves on being " logical ", are profoundly irrealistic and passionate. " We express ourselves logically in order to explain the illogical things that we do ". Among many examples, they value :
Being different : they do not feel uncomfortable being alone against everybody else (they would not think " maybe the others are right ") and do not value consensus.
Being synthetic (as opposed to analytic) : they do not like "weighing pros and cons" : it is mediocre. They prefer broad ideas and general picture. They write differently their business memos.
Being " grands seigneurs " : in many situations (when prestige or image are at stake), money is not an issue and they do not like to share bills the way Americans do.
Being negative : criticizing is valued and praising is not : it could lead the praised one to stop making efforts (typically, when a kid gets an B+, the reaction is "Why not an A?"). And also :
no taxpayers' rebellion, in spite of taxes being so high in France during public transport strikes, people who have to walk to their work, support the strikers.

And that is very important :

France is a "wine culture" country, like Italy or Spain (as opposed to "beer culture" countries) ; people do not drink wine to get drunk but to share a moment together ; they like to talk about it, discuss its taste, if it goes well or not with the food, etc...
In France you do not call (and order) a wine by its grape (Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet, etc...) but by its origin (Saint-Emilion, Pommard, Bandol, ...). The shape of the bottle is specific to each region : narrow for Alsace, cylindrical for Bordeaux, plump for Burgundy, etc...
Only the wine coming from the region of Champagne can be called "Champagne" but there are several other (very good) sparkling white wines : Vouvray, Crémant, Clairette, Blanquette...

The Wood-Shaving-War : to taste good and age well, wine requires tannin, which is traditionally provided by oak barrels. In many countries, typically in the USA, wine in stored in metallic barrels and wood shavings are added. This is strictly prohibited by French regulation. France has to fight against the European administration which, under the pressure of countries which do not produce any wine, want to make it legal. It is feared that this war will be lost.
And I like this one: Driving in Paris!
Consider (like they do you) any other driver as an enemy and a potential threat. Selfishness, lack of civic sense and aggressivity of French drivers is beyond anything you can imagine.... Driving in Paris is a real sport ! If you can drive around the Arch of Triumph at 6 p.m. and survive, you are becoming a real Parisian.
USEFUL TIPS for innocent American drivers in Paris.....
Do NOT take the concept of "lanes" too seriously : like the concept of "priority" for cars coming from the right, it is purely indicative (like, sometimes, red lights, pedestrian crossings, etc....)
When parking your car, you may hit (gently!) the two cars you are squished between.
You can scare pedestrians and make them run : it is part of the game.
Delivery trucks can do whatever they want (like double park) and as long as they want : if you are blocked, do not wait and try to escape.

Traffic at Place de l'Etoile
(It can be worst!)
Important question: Why are the French so cold?
In the absence of any relationship, silence is neutral (in the street, in an elevator, etc...). Franco-American anthropologist Raymonde Carroll writes: "It is indeed in public places that Americans in France for the first time have the experience, at times amusing, but often unpleasant and even painful of cultural misundrestanding. They feel rejected, disapproved of, criticized or scorned without understanding the reason for this "hostility" and they can only draw one of two conclusions : the French hate Americans" or the French are cold (hostile / unpleasant / arrogant / despicable)"... This is essentially due to the fact that Americans and the French do not attribute the same meaning to verbal exchanges.... together in a limited space ...the French person will recreate distance with silence, the American with conversation..." .
For most French, Americans are over-communicative and too familiar and they are always very disappointed to see that this American who was so nice and friendly does not even remember their name. For the French, if you are not a friend, you must be not cold but neutral. If your are socially too friendly with them, they think you are unsincere.
When they disagree, the French express it verbally much openly than Americans, who are more controlled and they are not at all afraid of a verbal fight. They even enjoy it. One of the best explanations for this was given by Nick Yapp and Michel Syrett in " Xenophobe's Guide to the French " . It's simply a factual matter. The French, they point out, are rude when they want to be. Their rudeness is neither unthinking nor forgetful, they say. They're rude when the occasion warrants it. Are they rude only to innocent foreigners ? Of course not !
" Among friends insults are also frequently traded, but with no permanent damage to the relationships. Quite a different case from England and the U.S. where if you get to that level, the friendship is condemned for life ". The point of all this is that if foreigners freak because they detect rudeness, irony, or a slight, they should feel flattered. They're being treated as if they were French ! A typical situation where Americans consider rude a Frenchman who is sincerely surprised by this reaction is the case of an instructor who treats you as if you were a French student, whatever the money you paid. Body language, which is very different, may also explain why Americans often consider rude a French person when he/she is not. The French love to bawl each other out ("s'engueuler") and it can be just a game and in any case totally harmless : Americans hate it and consider it rude.

Sermon for Sexagesima Sunday

Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us a parable: The sower went out to sow his seed. The seed is what bear life, but it is still in potentia – in potency or potentiality. It has to become in actu – in act. Potentia means a certain aptitude to change. It is being as it is capable of changing. The seed is a plant or a tree in potential, but it is not yet a plant. It has the possibility to become one. Maybe it will become one, or maybe not. Whether it will become a plant or not depends on certain conditions. When a sower sows a seed, it is an act of hope. He hopes that this seed will become a plant that that will yield fruits. If he had no hope at all, he would not sow.
The word of God is a seed of life. It bears the life of God. This word is proclaimed all over the world. God sows His word in every human soul, but it is still something fragile, in potentia. Saint Teresa of Avila compares a soul to an unproductive soil that Christ wants to turn into a beautiful garden. First the gardener has to remove the brambles and weeds. It is the first conversion, which is a renunciation of a life of sin. Saint John says in his first letter that whoever is born of God commits no sin for his seed abides in him. (1Jn 3,9) The seed of God cannot exist in a soul that has not yet renounce mortal sin. But at this point, the grace of God is still a little seed that can develop and grow or not. Renouncing sin is the first necessary step in order to make a beautiful garden, but there is still a lot of work to do. Once the gardener has removed the brambles and weeds, he can take care of the seed.

A seed needs water. It is our duty and our responsibility to water it so that it can grow. Saint Teresa says that there are four ways to water a garden: drawing water from a well, obtaining water by means of an aqueduct (or hose), letting water flow from a stream, and receiving natural rainfall. These are the four degrees of mental prayer.
In the first degree, the soul is active. This stage of prayer includes vocal prayer and discursive meditation. It is something good, especially for the beginners, but they should go further as Saint Teresa advices them not to spend all their time in doing so. Their method of prayer is most meritorious, but since they enjoy it so much, they sometimes fail to realize that they should have some kind of a sabbath, that is, a period of rest from their labors. . . . Let them imagine themselves, as I have suggested, in the presence of Christ, and let them continue conversing with him and delighting in him, without wearying their minds or exhausting themselves by composing speeches to him.
The second degree is when a soul begins to recollect itself, borders on the supernatural. This state is a recollecting of the faculties within the soul, so that its enjoyment of that contentment may provide greater delight.
The third degree is the stage of mystical prayer when all the faculties are centered on God. It is the sleep of the faculties, as Teresa says, which corresponds to a union of the entire soul with God.
And the last degree, that admits itself different degrees, is the prayer of union. It is infused by God and not attained by human efforts.
As the soul progress through these different degrees, it knows different conversions that bring it to a higher level of grace. The seed grows and yields more fruits. Father Garrigou-Lagrange has very well summarized this development of the grace of God in a soul in his book The three ages of the interior life that I recommend. As he explains, the interior life is a knowledge of truth and a love of good. In other words, it is the knowledge and the love of God. It is the life of God in us, given by the Divine grace.

This life develops in many areas, such as intellectual and scientific life because God is supremely intelligent. The artistic life is also concerned, because Christ Himself is the Art of the Father – Ars Patris – as the theologians of the Middle Age like to call Him. The literary life should not be forgotten, because our religion is the religion of the Incarnate Word. Thus, the words mean something to the Christians, as they express the reality of the things. And finally, social life has to be touched by the grace because there is a society in God which is also a communion between the Divine Persons. This is why Christianity does not affect only the souls but also the societies in all their dimensions, cultural, intellectual and artistic. If I work in the garden of my soul, it will become a beautiful yard. If my neighbors work too, it will be the whole neighborhood that will become beautiful. And then the city, and the county and the State will be embellished if here and there, Christians cultivate their garden. François-René de Chateaubriand has described in his famous book, The Genius of Christianity, how the Christian religion has contributed to the progress in arts and letters. You can also read the book of Thomas Wood: How the Catholic Church built Western Civilization.

(And other considerations that will remain only in the memories of my parishioners - at least, I hope so!)

Sermon for Septuagesima Sunday

It is now a new liturgical cycle that begins with Septuagesima Sunday. The cycle of the Nativity is now over. The mystery of the Incarnation has kept our attention and we have focused on the person of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It was a time of a serene joy that found its peak during Midnight Mass when the angel of God revealed the good news of the Nativity of the Savior: I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all the people.
Today, it seems that this joy has vanished. The very first words of today’s mass are even gloomy: The terrors of death surged round about me. The dominant liturgical color is now purple and it will be until Easter. The singing of the Alleluia, and the word ‘alleluia’ itself are banished even on feast days. It is an acclamation of joy and as such, it is not suitable in a time of austerity and penance. We have to wait until the night of Easter to hear it again.
Easter is precisely the center and the peak of this liturgical cycle. The mysteries of the Passion and of the Resurrection of Our Lord constitute the axis around which the entire liturgical year unfolds. We have meditated on the fact of the Incarnation during the first cycle. Now, let us consider its reasons and its consequences.
The liturgy reminded us this morning, during the Office of Matins, of the Creation. There is a deep similitude between the creation and the Incarnation, expressed by the very first words of the Sacred Scripture: In principio. In principio creavit Deus caelum et terram – In the beginning, God created heaven and earth. In principio erat Verbum – In the beginning was the Word. And Saint John clearly affirms that all things were made by Him, and that He was made flesh. Creation - Incarnation. In the work of the creation and the work of the Incarnation, God communicates Himself to the creatures. But the second communication happens to be a work of restoration that would proceed in a very dramatic way on the Cross.
The first man, Adam, fell. God would raise him again, but this new rise would be completed by a kind of annihilation like if it were a return to nothing. Creating is making things out nothing. The Redemption is a new creation and then it supposes a certain ‘nothing’. This is the meaning of the holocaust: a sacrifice whose victim is totally consumed. The Word would be this victim that offers Himself in expiation. Because He was annihilated – He emptied Himself, as Saint Paul says – He could rise again from a certain nothingness which is a new creation, more beautiful than the first one, as it is so well expressed in the beautiful prayer that the priest says when he prepares the chalice during offertory: O God, who established the nature of man in wondrous dignity, and still more admirably restored it.
The wages of sin is death. Adam felt the stranglehold of death in his flesh, as every man does now: The terrors of death surged round about me. The new Adam wanted to know it, but it changed it into a gift that brings us back life everlasting. Now, if we want to receive this gift, we have to follow Christ through His death and His burial, so that we can live again with Him. This is all the sense of our Baptism. We still have to live in accordance with our Baptism that has made us like Christ. This is why Saint Paul tells us in today’s epistle: I so fight as not beating the air, but I chastise my body and bring it into subjection. Bringing our bodies into subjection is our Lenten program. The season of Septuagesima already prepares our minds and spirits for this difficult but necessary task. It is the only way given to us for our restoration.
May Our Lady help us to be crucified with her Son, so that we can live with Him forever

Sermon for the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany

There are some days when you really feel the pain of living in a dry county and today is such a day. As you probably all know, the official news came yesterday morning, and unfortunately I did not have time yesterday to drive to another county in order to buy some bottles of Champagne, which would have allowed us to catholically celebrate this great event. But Saint Paul told us last week to rejoice with those who rejoice and we can share the joy of thousands of Catholics who are not deprived of sparkling wine.

Something is lacking in our earthly joy, but let nothing come to spoil our spiritual joy! By Wednesday January 21st 2009, the Congregation for Bishops issued a Decree that lifts the excommunication of Their Excellencies, Bishop Fellay, Bishop Tissier de Malleray, Bishop Williamson and Bishop de Galaretta. What a joy for all the faithful Catholics! What a gift for the Church! In a time of modernist heresy – the worst heresy ever seen in twenty centuries of Catholicism –and in a time of liturgical collapse, when so many souls are led astray on some pernicious paths that put them in the darkness instead of giving them the beautiful light of faith, it is a great grace that God gives to His Church.

I am not here to judge men and their intention. Nobody can do this. I am not here to tell who was right or who was wrong in 1988. I am not here to tell if the Decree of excommunication of 1988 was just or not and if the present Decree is simply an act of justice and of mercy. The situation generated by the crisis is confusing and it might be difficult to know with certitude what we have to do. Besides, each one reacts according to one’s particular situation and the events of one’s own life. Each one of us can say: I have done what I have done, but we can all wonder: what I would have done in another situation? Certainly, our own particular experience does not excuse us of searching for the objective truth, but also we must be prudent and humble when we search for the truth. The History of the Church shows us that it is not always so easy and simple. What would you have done in 1378? Who could tell with certitude who was the right Pope between Urban VI and Clement VII? Even the Saints did not agree together on this issue.

But there is one thing that we can learn from the History of the Church and there is one thing that we can learn from the present events. In spite of human and consequently fallible factors, Our Lord always rules His Church. The Pope is the visible head of the Church and he is a man, like you and me. Certainly he is above any other man on earth due to his position; certainly he is assisted by the Holy Ghost in his mission of supreme shepherd. Nevertheless he still is a man subjected to the contingencies of this world. The History of the Church shows us that a Pope can be a great and holy man. He also can be an indecisive man… or even a great sinner. Nevertheless, the Church of Christ still exists, still teaches the true and authentic faith. And what we said about the Pope is a fortiori truer for bishops, priests and faithful and for ourselves.

It is good to confide in the Lord rather than to have confidence in man. (Ps 117). It is good! It is something good, a virtuous act. And it is something that does good to you. When you know that men are weak and fallible, when you finally understand that it is only God that you can totally and fully trust, it makes your life simpler because you cannot be deceived. It gives you a greater liberty, a true liberty of loving and serving God. The life of the Saints is just the proof of what I am telling now and the concrete and practical application of this verse: It is good to confide in the Lord rather than to have confidence in man!

So, dear Brethren, today, in this terrible crisis that we know, in a time of apostasy, it is still good, it is even better than ever to confide in the Lord. Look how He takes care of His Church! Look how He takes care of His faithful servants! Saint Paul, that we also celebrate on this day of his conversion tells that to them that love God all things work together unto good (Rm 8,28). He does not say that God takes away your cross if you love Him, but that things work together unto good. Thus, we must banish from our lives doubt, rancor, despair, cowardice and whatever and be filled with joy, hope and gratitude, especially today. We do not deny that we live in a difficult time today, but we also believe that if we love God, all things work together unto good to us and nothing can change this.

Yes today, our hearts are full of joy and of gratitude. Blessed be Our Lord Jesus Christ for this! But we also know that the crisis is not over and that we have to continue our fight. As I told you last year, the Motu Proprio was a first step. The present Decree is another and very important step. Now, we have to continue what we have done. We have to continue to be faithful to God, and to the Church and to her teaching. We have to continue to work for the restoration of an authentic Catholic liturgy and to keep our churches sacred sanctuaries for the glory of God. We have to continue to work for the salvations of souls that can be saved only in the Catholic Church. We have to continue to spread the love of God around us, but for that we have to be ourselves full of love. But, as you see, our goal is not different than the one of the Society of Saint Pius X. They have never been different, but for a historical reason, we have decided to use different ways for the achievement of this goal.

We have to continue the work of a restoration of a Catholic culture in our society. And that is possible only if we live our faith. For us, here at Cherokee Village, our project of a church would be a visible sign of our faith. Let us continue to focus on this project. We are not in charge of the whole Church. There are qualified persons, who have received an official mission from the Church for that. It is not our duty to say what the Pope should or should not do. It is not our duty to say what this Bishop should do or should not do. But it is our duty to fulfill our obligations according to our own state of life. Certainly we should have a concern for the whole Church, because we are members of the Church. But, as we said last week, we have a position in the Church and we have to keep it and to work according to what we have received from God. And if all the faithful would content themselves of doing their duties, it is the whole Church that would be more beautiful, more luminous and brighter. She would illuminate the world by the holiness of her members.
May Our Blessed mother help us continue our work for the glory of God and the salvation of souls! Let us rejoice with her on this historical day and with all her children! Deo gratias!

Press release of the FSSP following upon the Decree of the Congregation for Bishops

Fribourg (Switzerland), Saturday, January 24th, 2009 - www.fssp.org

The Congregation for Bishops, having made public today the decree lifting the excommunication declared in 1988 regarding the four bishops ordained without pontifical mandate by Archbishop Lefebvre, The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter wishes to express its joy at the news of this step forward towards unity.
Since its foundation, the Fraternity of Saint Peter has not ceased to witness to its double attachment to the Seat of Peter and to the Tradition of the Church, praying constantly that a reconciliation could be achieved between the Holy See and the Society of Saint Pius X.
Today the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter unites itself completely to the hope of the Holy See, desiring “that this step be followed by the prompt accomplishment of full communion with the Church of the entire Fraternity of Saint Pius X, thus testifying true fidelity and true recognition of the Magisterium and of the authority of the Pope with the proof of visible unity”. (Decree of the Congregation for Bishops, 21 January 2009)
The Fraternity of Saint Peter would like to express its profound gratitude to the Sovereign Pontiff. It sees in this magnanimous gesture a call to unity for all Catholics in order to spread in the world, faced with all the contradictions of our day, the Reign of Christ.

Deo gratias

Press Release from the Superior General of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X

The excommunication of the bishops consecrated by His Grace Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, on June 30, 1988, which had been declared by the Congregation for Bishops in a decree dated July 1, 1988, and which we had always contested, has been withdrawn by another decree mandated by Benedict XVI and issued by the same Congregation on January 21, 2009.

We express our filial gratitude to the Holy Father for this gesture which, beyond the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X, will benefit the whole Church. Our Society wishes to be always more able to help the pope to remedy the unprecedented crisis which presently shakes the Catholic world, and which Pope John Paul II had designated as a state of “silent apostasy.”

Besides our gratitude towards the Holy Father and towards all those who helped him to make this courageous act, we are pleased that the decree of January 21 considers as necessary “talks” with the Holy See, talks which will enable the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X to explain the fundamental doctrinal reasons which it believes to be at the origin of the present difficulties of the Church.

In this new atmosphere, we have the firm hope to obtain soon the recognition of the rights of Catholic Tradition

+Bernard Fellay

The decree from the congregation for Bishops

By way of a letter of December 15, 2008 addressed to His Eminence Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos, President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, Mons. Bernard Fellay, also in the name of the other three Bishops consecrated on June 30, 1988, requested anew the removal of the latae sententiae excommunication formally declared with the Decree of the Prefect of this Congregation on July 1, 1988. In the aforementioned letter, Mons. Fellay affirms, among other things: "We are always firmly determined in our will to remain Catholic and to place all our efforts at the service of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which is the Roman Catholic Church. We accept its teachings with filial disposition. We believe firmly in the Primacy of Peter and in its prerogatives, and for this the current situation makes us suffer so much."His Holiness Benedict XVI - paternally sensitive to the spiritual unease manifested by the interested party due to the sanction of excommunication and trusting in the effort expressed by them in the aforementioned letter of not sparing any effort to deepen the necessary discussions with the Authority of the Holy See in the still open matters, so as to achieve shortly a full and satisfactory solution of the problem posed in the origin - decided to reconsider the canonical situation of Bishops Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson, and Alfonso de Galarreta, arisen with their episcopal consecration. With this act, it is desired to consolidate the reciprocal relations of confidence and to intensify and grant stability to the relationship of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X with this Apostolic See. This gift of peace, at the end of the Christmas celebrations, is also intended to be a sign to promote unity in the charity of the universal Church and to try to vanquish the scandal of division. It is hoped that this step be followed by the prompt accomplishment of full communion with the Church of the entire Fraternity of Saint Pius X, thus testifying true fidelity and true recognition of the Magisterium and of the authority of the Pope with the proof of visible unity.Based on the faculty expressly granted to me by the Holy Father Benedict XVI, in virtue of the present Decree, I remit from Bishops Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson, and Alfonso de Galarreta the censure of latae sententiae excommunication declared by this Congregation on July 1, 1988, while I declare deprived of any juridical effect, from the present date, the Decree emanated at that time.

Requiem for Louis XVI

The following video shows the Dies irae of the Requiem Mass celebrated for King Louis XVI. It was recorded wednesday January 21st at Saint Eugene Church in Paris, where I learned to serve Mass some years ago. I still remember this time with a certain nostalgia, especially when I had the honor to serve as subdeacon or deacon during Christmas or Holy Week.

sermon for the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany

Saint Paul reminds us again of our duties. We all have our place in a Christian community because the body of Christ is composed of different members that are all important for the common good. We have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us. We also have different vocations and we have to be faithful in our own state of life. I know that the temptation is great to look for something else. Priests are tempted to act as if they were not priests, considering themselves as anyone else and forgetting that they have been vested with the authority of Christ and His sacred power. Lay people think that they can do what priests do. It is true that allowing lay people to come into the sanctuary during the liturgy has created or increased a certain confusion of mind. The concept of the Church as the hierarchical society founded by Christ became blurred, and today, many consider the Church just as a family, a communion.
And the Church is really such, but not only. Being a family is a good thing in itself but it is not necessarily a sign of truth and of authenticity of the Catholic Church. There are many human institutions that consider themselves as a family. And even in the natural community that is a family, there is not always love and unity, especially today in a society when divorces are so usual.
It is with humility that we should consider our position in the Church. Whatever we have received, it is a gift from God, not only for ourselves, but for the entire community. But if I put myself above others, I can only fail in my vocation. If I think that I am right and that others are wrong, I can only fail in my vocation. If I try to deal with things that do not pertain to my state of life, I can only fail in my vocation. And failing in my vocation means that my salvation is jeopardized!
God asks us to be simple, to do just what we have to do, and to love. Let love be without pretense! You have to love, not to pretend to love. It is not the same thing. A true Christian loves while a professed Christian pretends to love. Both come to the church and are involved with the different activities of the community, but one is sincere, while the other is a hypocrite.
When Our Lord said to the scribe, who had answered Him that eternal life was to be gained by loving God and his neighbor, “Thou hast answered right”, this ought to be enough, Cardinal Newman says. But his object was not to please God, but to exalt himself. And, therefore, he went on to make an objection. “But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?” whereas they only are justified in God’s judgment, who give up the notion of justifying themselves by word or deed, who start with the confession that they are unjust, and who come to God, not upon their own merits, but for His mercy.
How often do we justify ourselves, which is a lack of simplicity, instead of just recognizing who we are and what we have done? O I know! That is an old story. Adam made his own excuse: the woman, whom Thou gavest to me, she gave me of the tree. Same thing for Eve: The serpent beguiled me. But we don’t have to imitate them.
How wise is the advice of Saint Paul: Do no set your mind on high things but condescend to the humble. There is but one Lord. We are all his servants. May Our Blessed Mother help us remember this!

In Memoriam

Louis XVI
Roi de France et de Navarre
(1754-1793)

Sermon for the feast of the Holy Family

The family has its origin in that same love with which the Creator embraces the created world, Pope John Paul II said in his letter to families. In fact all things, that have been created and founded by God, and therefore that are good, have their origin in the Divine love. The whole creation bears a certain image of God and allows us to have a certain knowledge of Him. There is an order and a hierarchy among the creatures which express the perfection of the Divine order and of God Himself. At the summit of the created world, there is a creature that seems to have God’s preference.
Pope John Paul II said again that before creating man, the Creator withdraws as it were into himself, in order to seek the pattern and inspiration in the mystery of his Being, which is already here disclosed as the divine "We". From this mystery the human being comes forth by an act of creation: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Gen 1:27).
At the very beginning, we catch a sight of God’s intimacy, especially at the moment when He creates man. Before creating each thing, He said : Let there be! Now He says: Let us make ! Us! Let us make man to our image in our likeness! Our! There are more than one person in God. There is the Father. There is the Son. Father, Son! The concept of family is already present within the Holy Trinity. And from the love between the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit proceeds from all eternity.

And now the Three Divine Persons create man, the jewel of the whole creation, to their image and likeness. God creates man with a distinction of gender: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. Then, right after, He gives them an order, the first order ever given to men: Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it. And John Paul II comments this: The Book of Genesis employs the same expressions used earlier for the creation of other living beings: "multiply". But it is clear that these expressions are being used in an analogous sense. Is there not present here the analogy of begetting and of fatherhood and motherhood, which should be understood in the light of the overall context? No living being on earth except man was created "in the image and likeness of God". Human fatherhood and motherhood, while remaining biologically similar to that of other living beings in nature, contain in an essential and unique way a "likeness" to God which is the basis of the family as a community of human life, as a community of persons united in love (communio personarum).
A family is founded by the marital covenant, when a man and a woman decide to unite themselves for their whole life. From this mutual love that makes a community of persons, new live spring. Wife and husband are procreators, ‘creators’ with God of new human persons. The love between each member of a family is an image of the love between the Three Divine Persons. Among all the human families, there is one that expresses more than any others this Divine Love: this is the Holy Family.
The second Person of the Holy Trinity has made visible the invisible things by His Incarnation. And it is precisely within a family that the Word of God was made flesh. In this family, there is an order and there is a hierarchy that express the divine perfections and the love of God. This family has a head: Saint Joseph. And Jesus and Mary are submitted to them and we do not see anywhere that it is a shame for them or a proof of inferiority. It was even the opposite: Jesus, the Incarnate Word, Holy, because God, source of holiness for men, is subject to His parents. How admirable is the humility of Christ and His obedience! Being made in the likeness of men, He humbled himself becoming obedient unto death, Saint Paul says. We are made in the likeness of God, but because of our pride, we are disobedient. So, Christ, made in our likeness, by His humility shows us the way of obedience, the only way that can lead us to God and give us back the divine life.
Learn, O Man, to obey, Saint Bernard says. Learn, O Earth, to be subject. Learn, O Dust, to submit. The Evangelist in speaking of thy Maker says: He was subject to them; that is, without doubt, to Mary and to Joseph. Be you ashamed, vain ashes that you are. God humbles Himself, and do you exalt yourself? God becomes subject to men, and will you, eager to lord it over men, place yourself above your Maker? O would that God might deign to make me, thinking such thoughts at times in my own mind, such answer as He made, reproving him, to His apostle: Go behind Me, Satan: because thou savorest not the things that are of God.
At the very beginning of his rule, Saint Benedict encourages his sons to practice the virtue of obedience: Listen, O my son, to the precepts of thy master, and incline the ear of thy heart, and cheerfully receive and faithfully execute the admonitions of thy loving Father, that by the toil of obedience thou mayest return to Him from whom by the sloth of disobedience thou hast gone away. And we know that Saint Benedict wants the monasteries to be schools of the Lord’s service.
But the first school of the Lord’s service, where all men are trained and educated is the family. It is there, that the children learn the virtues, provided that their parents teach them by their words and acts and first by the example of their own lives. It is in their family that children learn to practice the virtue of obedience that allows them to return to God. But in order to practice the virtue of obedience, they need a leader that guides them toward heaven and teach them how to serve God. That is the mission of the father.
Father, understand that you represent Christ in your family and that you are vested with His authority upon your wife and your children. As Saint Joseph led the Holy Family through the dangers and hazards of this world, you have to lead your family to a safe place. Saint Joseph was told by an angel. You too, have to take your counsels from heaven. If you want to guide your family, you have first to be well guided. After almost nine years of priesthood, I have noticed, that only a few men come for spiritual direction, and most of the time, they are young men who discern their vocation and often join a seminary or a religious community. But it is rare to see a father of family coming for spiritual direction. Yet, you need it, as anyone else, and I would say, even more than many others who do not have the care of souls. Father and husband, remember that your children and your wife need your direction!

Jesus, Mary, Joseph! Fathers, mothers and children, we have in Jesus, Mary and Joseph models to pray to and to imitate. Let us pray to them so that our family can become and remain school of the Lord’s service and schools of prayer for the highest glory of God and the sanctification of our souls.

Sermon for Sunday in the Octave of Christmas

This Child is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, and for a sign that shall be contradicted!

Let us continue our meditation of the mystery of the Nativity of Our Lord with the great Bossuet. Religion, he says, is a sentiment composed of fear and joy. It inspires fear in man because he is a sinner; it inspires joy in him, because he hopes in the remission of his sins. It inspires fear, because God is just; it inspires joy because God is good. This is the reason why the Psalmist invites us to serve the Lord with fear and to rejoice into Him with trembling. (Ps 2,11)

It is true that Our Lord is an object of consolation for many who, in spite of their condition of sinners, truly hate their sins and amend their lives. They are those who serve the Lord with fear every day of their life and do not content themselves of a mere ritual participation in the exercises of public worships, which is certainly a most excellent thing in itself but can be quite insufficient or even pharisaic if it is not preceded and followed by other acts of virtue. There are not a few, these Christian whom piety vanish right after Mass. There are not a few, these penitents who claim that they will amend their life in the confessional, but as soon as they have left it, return exactly to their same earthly and mundane life. For such Christians who do not have the fear of God, Christ can hardly be an object of consolation.

He rather is an object of contradiction. He is such a sign for the proud people who do not recognize and accept the Incarnation of the Word. He also is such a sign for many Christians, who, while they believe in this mystery, do not understand the great lesson of humility given by Christ. They have forgotten the baseness of their own birth, Bossuet comments. Christians by name, they prefer to be served rather than be servant. The true nobility is first the one of the heart not the one received by birth and the true servant of God is recognizable by his magnanimity, the greatness of his soul. There is no magnanimity without humility.

And what does offend the world is precisely the humility of Our Lord, Bossuet says again. It is such a scandal for those who seek only the earthly good and their own satisfaction. They were many among the Jews; they are still many among the Christians. Then, since Christ disturbs their own conception of their life, they charge Him and accuse Him:
Doth the Christ come out of Galilee? - But we know this man, whence he is. -thou being a man, makest thyself God. - Thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil. - Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners.

The humility of the Son of God is unbearable for them as it reminds them that they should imitate Him and renounce to their life of sin. The Savior tells them: You seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. (Jn 8,37) And Bossuet puts these words in the mouth of Our Lord: The lights of your conscience and its persecution that it creates in your heart do not move you. For this reason you want to switch them off. The truths of the Gospel scandalize you. You begin to fight them, not with reason; you do not have a reason. You fight them out of laziness, blindness or fury.

You might think that those words are not for you. You do not attend to kill Our Lord and you do not judge Him! Are you so sure? You certainly do not act this way toward Our Lord in person, but have you forgotten what He told you many times? Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me (Mt 25,40)
Can you say with the same certitude that you never judge your neighbor or that you are never angry with him, which would make you a murder: You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (Mt 5, 21-22)

Be sure that if you do not amend your life, Christ will be a sign of contradiction to you. Is He destined to be for your fall or for your rise? This depends on how you receive Him in your life and how you conform yours to his life. The humility of the crèche shows us what our life should be. It anticipates the sufferings of the Passion, but then, we know that it is for our rise.

May Our Blessed Mother help us understand this truth for the good of our souls.

A Catholic Monarch stands against euthanasia

LUXEMBOURG, December 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) -

The Grand Duke of Luxembourg is set to lose his power to veto laws after he threatened to prevent the passage of a law permitting euthanasia in the tiny European country.
As the head of state, Grand Duke Henri has the power to prevent the passage of a law by refusing to sign it, according to the existing constitution. He stated recently that for "reasons of conscience" he would not be able to sign the proposed law, which would allow doctors to kill their patients under certain circumstances.
After his statement provoked what the press described as a "constitutional crisis," the Grand Duke agreed to an amendment to the constitution that would make his signature a mere formality, rather than a promulgation of a law. Under the new system, he says he will be willing to sign the law, because he believes that it will no longer signify his approval.
Although the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Junker, also opposes the law, Junker claims that the vote of the nation's representatives must override the conscientious objection of the Grand Duke.
“I understand the Grand Duke's problems of conscience," he reportedly told the press. "But I believe that if the parliament votes in a law, it must be brought into force."
The duke's threatened non-cooperation in the promulgation of the law would have been the second time in the last one hundred years that the veto power was used by the nation's sovereign. The last time was in 1919, when the Grand Duchess Marie-Adelaide refused to sign a law that would have reduced religious instruction in the nation's educational system.
In a similar case, the King of Belgium refused to sign his country's pro-abortion law in 1990, and the law was promulgated without his signature.
However, Luxembourg's Grand Duke has been unwilling to imitate his Belgian counterpart and resist the new law using his constitutional power. Instead, he has voluntarily given it up so that the nation's legislators can pass the law without his approval.
The law will allow doctors to kill patients diagnosed as "terminally ill" upon the patient's request, after review by two doctors and a panel of experts.
Luxembourg, which is nestled between Germany, Belgium, and France and has a population of slightly less than half a million people, is the wealthiest nation per-capita in the world, and the vast majority call themselves Catholic. However, despite a large percentage of the population that continues to cherish family values, the nation's democratically elected officials have largely rejected Catholic moral teaching in the last 30 years. Abortion, for example, has been legal since 1977.

His Royal Highness Henri, by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Duke of Nassau, Count Palatine of the Rhine, Count of Sayn, Königstein, Katzenelnbogen and Diez, Burgrave of Hammerstein, Lord of Mahlberg, Wiesbaden, Idstein, Merenberg, Limburg and Eppstein.

Crown Prince Henri was sworn in as Luxembourg's new monarch October, 7 when his father, Grand Duke Jean, stepped down after 36 years at an abdication ceremony. Henri, 45, became Luxembourg's sixth grand duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established. His father, 79, resigned in order to hand responsibility to his son. Henri pledged allegiance in the parliament, located next door to the grand ducal palace. Afterward, he and his Cuban-born wife, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, strolled from the parliament, around the block - waving to spectators and shaking outstretched hands - and back to the palace, a Disneyesque building of turrets and wrought iron that rises above the city's narrow cobblestone streets. In a proclamation, Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's government said Henri will be ``a most worthy grand duke,'' due to his ``fine character and in-depth knowledge of his people.''

From a balcony at the palace, the new grand ducal couple, their five children and the outgoing monarch waved to hundreds of people packing the narrow Rue du Marche aux Herbes below them. The nation of 429,000, wedged between Belgium, France and Germany, measures only 52 by 36 miles. The capital city straddles a deep, craggy ravine that was first settled in the 10th century. It is lined by 14 miles of centuries-old fortifications.
The country's national motto is 'We Want To Stay What We Are' and continuity is what the new monarch promised his overwhelmingly Roman Catholic subjects. In his first address after taking office, he urged them to retain family values, to ensure equal rights for men and women and to not be blinded by their own prosperity that comes from relaxed banking rules that have brought hundreds of financial institutions to gleaming offices ringing the old city center. ``We have received a great deal. Yet are we giving enough in return? Are we not too selfish? Do we still notice people less fortunate than ourselves here in Luxembourg and abroad?'' he asked, speaking in Luxembourgish, which is a blend of French and German.
The Grand Duke Henri was married on the 14 February, 1981, to Miss Maria Teresa Mestre, born in Havana (Cuba) on the 22 March, 1956. Their children are Prince Guillaume, (11-11-1981), Prince Félix (3-6-1984), Prince Louis (3-8-1986), Princess Alexandra (16-2-1991) and Prince Sébastian (16-4-1992).

Sermon for the first Sunday of Advent

The first Sunday of Advent begins the new liturgical year and the church already presents to our minds a meditation on the end of times. From her foundation by Our Lord and her public manifestation on the day of Pentecost to the end of times, the Church continues her pilgrimage until the achievement of everything. The old regimes, namely the Law of nature and the Mosaic Law, have been abolished and we are now in the fullness of time according to Saint Paul or already in the last times according to Saint Peter, since the mystery of the Incarnation has been revealed.
Everything has been set by God before the foundation of the world but the manifestation of God’s plan to the creatures finds its fulfillment in history. God is not in the time: He is eternal, He is The Eternal. It is hard for us to realize what eternity means because we have no experience of it. We certainly have an intellectual concept of eternity, which is the absence of time, but since we are in the time, we hardly understand the notion of eternity. And the problem with us, poor and frail creatures, is that we often prefer to feel and to experiment rather than to comprehend with our intellect. This is a temptation of our fallen nature, but when it’s become a principle, it has some terrible consequences very harmful to souls. Saint Pius X have well explained the error of modernism that is founded upon a wrong principle: vital immanence. Religion is not any more something revealed by God but comes from a need or an impulsion. Therefore, Saint Pius X, says, as God is the object of religion, we must conclude that faith, which is the basis and foundation of all religion, must consist in a certain interior sense, originating in a need of the divine. This need of the divine, which is experienced only in special and favorable circumstances cannot of itself appertain to the domain of consciousness, but is first latent beneath consciousness, or, to borrow a term from modern philosophy, in the subconsciousness, where also its root lies hidden and undetected.
In other words, Religion, Faith, Revelation don’t have any more a supernatural and superior principle, but come from ourselves as a result of a need that has to be expressed in a way or another. Unfortunately, we can see the result of this error almost in all the churches where the liturgy became an occasion to express this need. Since modernism has changed the faith of the Church, it is not really surprising that it has changed her liturgy that is, by its very nature, the expression of her faith, and especially faith in the mysteries of the Incarnation and of the Redemption. The liturgy became a place and a time of experimentation, a laboratory. You know that in chemistry when you put together different compounds you may obtain a new one. So, when you introduce in churches different things that don’t pertain to the liturgy, you may obtain a new thing that is not any more a liturgy according to the mind of the Church, but a kind of celebration in the meaning of a party. The Holy Mysteries are no longer meditated and people end by losing faith. The sacred liturgy loses its character of objectivity – the objectivity of faith – and is submitted to the personal interpretation of each one. Then, you judge and appreciate a Mass according to some subjective principles that can be the personal piety of the priest or the talent of the singers and musicians or the dress of the lady that reads the epistle or whatever you want. And if you are pleased by what you see and hear, you declare that it is a beautiful Mass.
But Mass is beautiful in itself, by its nature, because it is first true and good. It is the Sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus Christ and along with all others Sacraments and Offices and prayers that constitute the Liturgy of the Church, it is a visible sign of the mysteries hidden from the beginning and now revealed to men. The liturgical year is a kind of unwinding in a period of time of the eternal mysteries of God and it leads us toward the consummation of centuries when finally times will end.

The liturgy introduces us into the Divines mysteries and leads us toward eternity

Now Charles Cardinal Journet wonders why the Church goes on and lasts in the time. The first answer is obvious, he says. The mission of the Church is to dispense until the end of times the mystery of the Redemption of Christ. Our Lord saves us by, and only by His Church. This is why He sends the Church in mission in all the Nations to preach the Gospel and to sanctify people through the reception of the Sacraments of the New Law. Here is the true progress of the Church. The Church progresses when the Gospel is taught and when the Sacraments are performed and offered to the people. This is the continuation, the development and the manifestation throughout the centuries and all over the world of the gift of Pentecost. The Church continues her mission and her pilgrimage between the persecution of men and the consolations of God according to Saint Augustine. This is the time of the Church that takes place between the first and the second coming of Christ and we have nothing else to expect.
But this mission can be fulfilled only with Charity, which is the love of God and of the truth, which is finally the same thing. God is the Truth. So we cannot pretend to have charity if we do not have the courage of proclaiming the truth. And as the time when we live now is more difficult because of the rejection of God and of the revelation, we certainly need more courage than our elders, and we certainly need more charity. We certainly live in a time when God asks us more. You know, in difficult times for the Church, especially in times of persecution, we can see two things. We can see the renunciation of certain Christians who give up their faith and embrace the ideas of the world. But we can see also the heroism of others who are ready to give up anything, even their own life, for God, and who display a beautiful example of charity.
As we come near the end of times – obviously we are nearer year after year – we expect more persecution of men. But we are waiting for a great consolation of God when things that are still hidden will be unveiled with the second coming of Christ. Until this day, let us continue to meditate on the mysteries of our faith by living them, especially through the Divine Liturgy that the Church offers.

Passion often renders the most clever man a fool, and even sometimes renders the most foolish man clever.

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

In 1830, one of the apparitions sanctioned by Holy Mother Church occurred in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, the Rue de Bac, Paris. There were three visions given to Saint Catherine Labouré who, at the time of the first one, was a novice in the order. She was awakened at 11:30 PM on the eve of the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, by a "shining child" who led her to the chapel where she saw Our Lady, who spoke to her for two hours about the difficult task that lay ahead.

Four months later, on November 27 Catherine had the second vision wherein she saw a three-dimensional scene of the Blessed Virgin standing on a white globe with dazzling rays of light streaming from her fingers and she heard a voice say:"These are the symbols of grace I shed upon those who ask for them." A frame formed around the Mother of God and within it was written in gold letters, O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

The voice then told her to have a medal struck after this model. Then the vision turned and on the reverse side was a large M with a bar through it and a cross over it. Beneath this M were the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, one crowned with thorns and the other pierced by a sword.

This second vision occurred periodically until 1831. Because she wanted to remain unknown, Catherine told them only to her confessor. Msgr. Aladel, who received permission from the Archbishop of Paris to have the medal struck. The first 1500 were issued in June of 1832, and almost at once there were reported healings, conversions and miraculous events. The Saint could not be convinced to appear at any of the canonical hearings, but eventually the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary was sanctioned on the overwhelming evidence of the miracles obtained by those wearing the medal. Saint Catherine Laboure only revealed herself as the visionary eight months before her death, in 1876. Like St. Therese of Lisieux, this came as a surprise to the other nuns as they considered her quite ordinary. She was canonized in 1947 by Ven. Pope Pius XII. Her Feast is November 27 as is the Feast of the Miraculous Medal, although in some places it is celebrated on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception because of its relation to it.

La maxime du jour

By François de La Rochefoucauld ( the writer, not the Cardinal )

What we term virtues are often but a mass of various actions and divers interests, which fortune or our own industry manage to arrange; and it is not always from valour or from chastity that men are brave, and women chaste.
